The USNG is the location-referencing grid identified in the
Catastrophic Incident Search and Rescue Supplement (CISAR) to the National
Search and Rescue Plan; the National GeoCONOPs and the Joint-Chiefs-of-Staff as
the geo-reference grid for land-based disaster operations. This interactive
training session will provide students with a thorough understanding of US
National Grid (USNG) to support planning and preparedness initiatives; implementation
during emergencies and disaster operations; and developing a unified
situational awareness from tactical operations to incident support. Using
hands-on short desktop examples students will interact with maps; compasses;
GPS and other location-enabled tools that will assist them in preparing for and
responding to emergencies of all sizes. Attendees will participate in practical exercises outside the classroom during the session.

Defining and Managing Disaster Operations Across Jurisdictions and Communities
of Practice

Session Description:
This interactive training session will teach students to use
a common location language including the US National Grid to define operational
areas; manage operations; and communicate essential elements of information
necessary to provide a common operational picture across fire/EMS; law
enforcement; and emergency management communities of practice. Students will
explore location language and develop an understanding of the appropriate form
and format for a variety of operational environments. Hands-on; interactive
table top activities will instruct students on how to read and use the US
National Grid (USNG) to transform incident specific information into actionable
information to manage emergency and disaster operations and build situational
awareness. Students will interact with maps and simple tools that will assist
them in preparing for and responding to emergencies of all sizes.

In addition, sessions on mutual aid, incident management teams, after action findings from Hurricane Sandy related to wide area search and rescue, development of healthcare coalitions for disasters, and patient movement in catastrophic incidents will be offered among other great sessions.
